Why Wyre Is Perfect For Exploring The Rural Midlands
Staying at a holiday lodge in the Wyre Forest is a great way to relax, enjoying the peace and scenery that is right on your doorstep. For many people, that is more than enough for a great break to get away from it all.
However, if you are keen to explore the region, perhaps because you have travelled from overseas or from a more distant part of Britain, the location is ideal for getting around the rural parts of the West Midlands.
Whereas those interested in the urban area centred on Birmingham will base themselves further east, beyond Kidderminster at the very least, the Wyre Forest is centrally located for a great tour of the beautiful countryside that Worcestershire and Shropshire have to offer, with Wales just a little further west.
What Are The Best Rural Features Of The West Midlands?
National Landscapes (formerly known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty) you can visit include:
- The Shropshire Hills, which lie to the west of the Wyre Forest and feature upland landscapes such as the Long Mynd plateau, the volcanic Stretton Hills and the wooded Wenlock Edge.
- The Malvern Hills in Worcestershire, famous for their high, airy walks and spring water
- Cannock Chase, a wooded area in Staffordshire
Other great rural attractions include:
- Offa's Dyke, a ditch and mound earthwork that runs for nearly 200 miles that marked the boundary between Wales and the Saxon Kingdom of Mercia before the Norman Conquest.
- Kinver Edge, a sandstone ridge overlooking the Worcestershire village of Kinver that contains caves used as homes until the 1960s.
- Bodenham Arboretum near Kidderminster, a 134-acre site featuring wonderful woodland walks, a hidden garden and a chain of lakes.
These attractions are just some of the wonderful things you can enjoy within easy travelling distance of the Wyre Forest, showing a different side to the Midlands that contrasts with its reputation as an area of urban sprawl and industry. Out here, it is all about greenery, hills and woodland.
