Manor Holding Byre - Accessibility

Rustic seclusion is the characteristic that strikes most people first about Manor Holding, as it is located 100m off a rough forest track (maximum recommended speed 16kph /10mph), half a kilometre (1/3 mile) from the nearest tarmac country lane.  Convenient parking is available adjacent the Cottage and Byre for several cars.  Maximum width of vehicle 2.5m.  Maximum height 4m.  Parking for larger vehicles, up to 2.7m width, is available  in dry weather after the July hay cut, within the triangular field next to the drive, by prior arrangement.

Ground Floor

Manor Holding Byre is intended to be usable by ambulant people, accompanied by up to one wheelchair user who has moderately good mobility in other respects.

It has wheelchair accessible ground floor doors, a ground floor wet-room shower / toilet designed to accommodate a standard wheelchair (750mm width clearance).  This opens off the main living room.

The two seater sofa in the main ground floor living room, is easily converted to a comfortable single bed, by removing the leather covered cushions and pulling on the tubular steel frame. Pillows and bedding are provided separately.  A well equipped kitchenette opens off this living room.  This has an under counter fridge and utility cupboard, but standard height cooker and double sink.  Crockery and a large microwave are located on higher shelves.  A short step ladder is provided for reaching the highest crockery shelves, but should not be used by those prone to vertigo or unsteady on their feet.

The west wall features high level alcoves filled with book shelves for the more literary and algile.  A longer lightweight ladder can be provided on request to reach the highest book shelves, but should only be used with caution and in accodance with manufacturer's guidance, by those confident in using ladders.  This ladder is stored out of reach of children.  No liability can be accepted for use of this ladder, which is made available solely at user's own risk.

Twin Bedroom

The Byre has a compact twin bed room, separately accessed by steep external stone steps.  This room might suit an ambulant carer.  Caution - these steps may be icy in winter.

Forest Paths

The forest track network through out the forest includes in most areas, routes accessible to off road style "Tramper" wheelchairs made by Beamer; these are available for hire at the nearby Forestry Commission "Wyre Forest Centre" at Callow Hill. (Check availability and prices with Mr Chris Mansell on 44(0) 1905 533 839.  Please give a few days notice if possible); but robust ambulant assistance is recommended if venturing beyond the plateau edge in the forest. Many of the numerous paths are waymarked but it is still easy to get lost. Maps, compass and emergency referee's whistle are provided for guests' use.  (Please note that mobile phone reception is intermittent at best and other path users are infrequent in this part of the forest, so reliance should not be placed on help from strangers).

Loved watching the wildlife and birds, was upset not to see the badgers though.
